what are questionnaires
a list of questions written down and given to the respondents
what are the two types of questions found in questionnaires
closed ended questions
open ended questions
what are open ended questions
the respondents are given blank spaces to write their opinion
what are closed ended questions
the respondent is provided with options to choose from
what are postal questionnaires
questionnaires posted/mailed to the respondents that respondents are expected fill out and mail them back
what are the strengths of questionnaires
- high in reliability
- less risk that the respondent will give biased answers or try to anticipate what the researcher wants to hear
- allows the use of a large sample
- researcher effects are avoided
- the responses are precise and easier to analyse because the questions are precoded
- high in generalizability because you can use it on a large sample size
why are questionnaires high in reliability
it has highly reliable data because everyone answers the same question. it’s easy to replicate
what are the limitations of questionnaires
-it suffers from low response rate reducing representativeness and generalisability
- it may be filled out by someone else other than the respondent which reduces validity
- the respondent does not get a chance to provide their own answers/views because of researcher imposed questions and choices this lowers validity
disadvantages of postal questionnaires
Low response rate – can’t be bothered to fill in and return.
* Researcher can’t be certain who has filled in the questionnaire.
* No opportunity to seek clarity if respondents have some kind of query.
