Questionnaire Flashcards
What is the problem with most psychological constructs?
They are not directly measurable
How can we define and measure a construct?
By finding out what characteristics tend to produce similar ratings and responses
What 3 things should a questionnaire do / not do?
No leading questions / no ambiguity / use consistent rating scales
What does discrimination mean?
The degree of difference between people should be proportional to the difference in scores
What does reliability mean?
The accuracy of measurement / each persons score should be the same at different points in time
What does validity mean? What are the 2 types?
Measuring what you intend / Content and Factorial
What is content validity?
Items should relate to and cover the whole construct with no overlap
What is factorial validity?
Responses on certain items should correlate with each other
What does wording do?
Operationalise the variables to quantify the responses / the wording can dramatically effect the answers
What are 3 effects of wording to consider?
Double negatives / double barrelled / acquiescence bias
What should you do to avoid double negative questions?
Make questions clear
What should you do to avoid double barrelled questions?
Only ask one thing at a time
What should you do to avoid acquiescence bias?
Reverse statements
Qualities of open questions?
Exploration fo themes / unrestrictive / difficult to quantify
Qualities of closed questions?
Responses are set to a specific choice of options
