What does discourse analysis do?
Analyse text and talk / looking at what people do with language
What are text materials? What are they not?
They are a construction of the world, not a representation of it
What are the 5 stages of DA?
Formulate a research question / gather material / read / code / analyse
What are 7 rhetorical devices?
Disclaimer / stake inoculation / extreme case formula / category entitlement / passive voice / three-part lists / identity claims
What is the function of disclaimers?
To deny a criticism before it is made
What is the function of stake inoculations?
To rebut a potential claim that they have previously made
What is the function of extreme case formula?
Using extreme words to justify or defend
What is the function of category entitlement?
Accepting that certain people are entitled to make specific knowledge claims
What is the function of passive voice?
Weak wording to downplay the responsibility of the actor in relation to the verb
What is the function of three-part lists?
List of three is complete, satisfying and convincing
What is the function of identity claims?
The type of person you claim to be, to achieve an objective
What 2 ways can validity issues be solved with DA?
Discuss analysis with others / identify and defend claims
What is the difference between Quant. and Qual. analysis with regards to interpretations issues?
Quant. solves interpretation issues before / Qual. solves interpretation issues after
What are the advantages of DA?
Looks at how people use words / useful for studying power / applicable to many topics / can use variety of data
What are the disadvantages of DA?
Doesn’t generalise / may not be appropriate / relativism
