What are presentational features?
Features that add to the structure or appearance of the text.
For example: Headline Subheading Picture Caption
Which language techniques are often found in headlines?
Cliche
Pun
Alliteration
What is a cliche?
A well known phrase that most readers would understand or relate to.
For example:
Wake up and smell the coffee
Love at first sight
What is a pun?
A play on words; a word or phrase that has more than one meaning.
Puns are usually used to create humour.
How do you structure your paragraphs for question 2?
Point Evidence Explain (optional explore) Deeper thinking
What should you focus on when analysing the picture?
Colours - light, dark or bright?
Foreground - what stands out?
Background - what is the setting/scenery like?
What should your deeper thinking contain in question 2?
A link to the text.
What does question 2 always ask you to do?
Explain how source 2’s presentational features are effective and how they link to the text.
How do you link the headline to the text?
Think about what the headline is suggesting to the reader. Does the text also add to what the headline is suggesting?
For example:
Headline: Up, up and away!
Text: Explains the experience of travelling in a hot air balloon.
How do you link the picture to the text?
Think about the tone the picture creates, or what it is literally showing the reader. Does the text reflect/also show this?
For example:
Picture: Dull colours with leafless trees in the background.
Text: Discusses the negative impact climate change is having on the environment.
What must you not link together in question 2?
Two presentational features, such as the headline and the picture.
How many paragraphs do you need to write for question 2?
At least one paragraph about each presentational feature.
For example, if asked about the headline, subheading and picture, you will need to write three paragraphs.
What is alliteration?
Repeated sounds at the beginning of words.
Alliteration often makes headlines more engaging and memorable for the reader, as it creates a rhythm.
