What does question 1 always ask you to do?
Show an understanding of source 1.
It will generally ask what you learn about the topic of the text.
How do you structure your answer for question 1?

What is it most important to do in your deeper thinking for question 1?
Make a link to another part of source 1 that further explains your point.
The mark scheme looks for evidence of making ‘connections’, so this is very important!
What is not necessary to do in question 1?
You don’t need to explore language choices or explain why the reader would be interested in the text.
How many paragraphs do you need to write for question 1?
Aim for at least three paragraphs, all containing evidence.
