What is hyperbole?
An over exaggeration.
For example:
I had a million thoughts running through my mind.
You could have knocked him over with a feather
What is irony?
The humorous or sarcastic use of words, implying the opposite of what is expected.
For example:
A man who is a traffic cop gets his license suspended for unpaid parking tickets.
What is pathos?
Language that evokes feelings of pity or sympathy.
For example:
Emotional anecdotes used to persuade somebody to feel a certain way, or do something (e.g. animal cruelty adverts).
What is symbolism?
Objects, colours, words, sounds, etc. that imply an idea or theme.
For example:
The word ‘hung’ implies death, creating a negative tone.
What is an oxymoron?
When contradictory or opposite ideas appear together.
For example:
The silence was deafening.
She was clearly confused.
What is juxtaposition?
Two ideas/words being placed together with contrasting effects.
For example:
I was laughing and crying at the same time.
What is satire?
Sarcastic or political humour.
