A 35 year old female presents to her GP with a new neck swelling that she noticed 1 week ago. She denies weight changes, heat intolerance, skin changes, palpitations or tiredness. On examination, there is a thyroid nodule which is firm and hard in consistency. Blood tests show:

TSH: 1.1 uIU/mL (0.2-4.2)

Given the likely diagnosis, what is the next step in the management?

A

Ultrasound and fine needle aspiration

Any patient with an unexplained new thyroid nodule should be referred via the urgent cancer referral pathway for an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration.
