Shielding
Electrons in lower energy atomic orbitals reduce the electrostatic attraction between the protons on the nucleus and the electrons in the higher energy atomic orbitals
Pauli exclusion principle
No two electrons can have the same set of quantum numbers
Hund’s rule
Electrons will fill the same energy level orbitals to yield the maximum number of unpaired spins
Aufbau principle
Start at the lowest energy level, for a ground state electron configuration all electrons should be at the lowest possible energy.
Electron configuration
how the electrons are distributed among the various atomic orbitals
Diamagnetic
Substances do not contain net unpaired spins and are slightly repelled by a magnet
Paramagnetic
Substances are those that contain net unpaired spins and are attracted by a magnet
