Quantum Numbers Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 Quantum variables
A
The Principle Quantum Number
The secondary Quantum number
Magnetic Quantum number
Spin Quantum number
2
Q
Principle quantum number
A
- describes size and energy of orbital (Is the orbital)
- The orbitals increase by full integers that correspond to specific energy levels
- Spaces between orbitals are not equal
- n=1 is ground state
3
Q
Secondary Quantum number
A
- s-orbital or l=0 is spherical
- p-orbital or l=1 is double lobed
- d-orbital or l=2 and f-orbitals or l=3 are made up of more complex lobes
- These sub-levels always exist from ) to N-1
4
Q
Magnetic quantum Number
A
- breaks the sublevels into individual orbitals
- defines the spatial orientation along a standard set of coordinates
- is l=2 than ml= -2,-1,0,1,2
5
Q
Spin Quantum Number
A
- Electrons act like mini-magnets, where spinning creates a magnetic field
- It is describes as ms and there are two possible values
6
Q
Pauli Exclusion Principle
A
states that within the same atom, no two electrons can have all four of its quantum
