Bohr's Mdel Of The Atom Flashcards
Limitations to Rutherford’s model of the atom
If electrons are orbiting the nucleus, they would be constantly changing direction and speed, and accelerating
If a charged particle accelerates, it produces electromagnetic radiation called photons, which makes it lose energy
If an electron lost energy as it orbits, it would spiral into the nucleus and the atom would collapse
What did Bohr use to develop his model of the atom?
The emission spectrum of the hydrogen atom to develop a quantum model for the hydrogen atom
What is spectroscopy
The scientific study of the spectra in order to determine properties of the source of the spectra
Wha happened in the hydrogen experiment?
- H2 bonds are broken by high-energy spark
- H atoms are excited and contain excess energy
• They release this energy through wavelengths, when it’s passed through a spectroscope
When was the line spectrum created in Bohr’s experiments?
When electricity is applied to elemental gas, then light is created and passed through the sample + prism
What did the hydrogen emitting the excess energy indicate?
That when they do they produce a spectrum that contains particular discrete wavelengths, indicating energy is quatisized
what did Bohr conclude?
- That electrons can only move in specific orbits around the nucleus which had specific energy levels
- He theorized that the energy level of an orbit increased with its distance from the nucleus
If an electron moves to a lower energy level…
it loses potential energy
If an electron moves to a higher energy level..;
it gains potential energy
During a transition to a higher energy level…
an electron absorbs specific quantity of energy, such as when it is struck by a photon
During a transition to a lower energy …
an electron emits a photon of a particular quantity of energy
