Descriptive Studies
case study/series
cross sectional
longitudinal
Associative Studies
case control
cohort
Case control studies
compare pt with a disease to those from th same population without disease
Cohort studies
defined group is followed over time
comparison is made between all exposed/not exposoed and development of disease
Predictive studies
identify variables that predict particular outcomes
independent (predictor) and dependent (outcome) variables are identified
Comparitive studies
establish cause and effect between dependent and independent variables
Randomisation
each participant has same chance of assignment to intervention or control
types of randomisation
simple - flip a coin
stratified - occurs with specific strata
experiemental comparison analysis
t tests
man-whitney u.test
chi squared
relative risk and odds ratio
Quasi experimental comparison analysis
no random assignment or intervention
indepdndent variable is only partially under researcher control
examines cause and effect by ruling out plausible alternative explanations
Causal comparative studies
research question aims to identify a causal relationship between dependent and independent variables
when in independent varibale unable to be manipulated
