What are qual research methods?
naturalistic research
means of understanding a question from the perspective of the population, and is effective in deriving culturally specific info about the values, opinions, behaviours and social contexts of a population
Why us qual research methods?
understanding how people experience a research questions through their opinions, behaviours, beliefs, emotions and relationships
Methods of qual research
participant observation - for identifying naturally occurring behaviours in a normal context
in depth interview - for identifying info on individual history etc
focus groups - for identifying cultural norms of a group
differences between qual and quan research
analytical objectives types of questioning types of data collected types of collection tools forms that collected data take flexibility of study design
advantages of qual design
meaninful and culturally salient to the participant
data is often unanticipated by the researcher
data is rich and explanatory in nature
Purposive sampling
participants selected fur to a common trait or experience: HIV status, gender, class, race, religion
Quota sampling
participant numbers are considered and defined during design of the study based on age, gender, profession, marital status
i.e selected based on their likely insight or experience into the research question
snowball sampling
uses participants to recruit their social contacts who are likely to have similar experiences
ethics in qual research - principles
respect for persons: autonomy and prevent exploitation
beneficience: minimise risk to the pt
justice: ensure those who participate should also benefit
informed consent
participant understands the purpose of the research, what they are expected to do, the risks and benefits, voluntary participation, confidentiality is protected, name and contact of the investigator
