Quantitative Data 1 (5) Flashcards
Operationalising
Definition of phenomenon in terms of the precise procedures taken to measure it
An example of nominal
A football player having a number on their shirt
Example of ordinal
1st 2nd 3rd in a race
Example of interval
Difference between scores 2 and 3 is the same as the difference between 9 and 10
Example of ratio
100milliseconds is twice as fast as 200 milliseconds
What are descriptive statistics
Ways in which we summarise data
Frequency distributions
How many times each score occurred. Also known as histogram
Normal distribution
Scores are distributed symmetrically around the centre of the scores
Bimodal
Have two scores of equally high value
Multimodal
Have several scores of the same value
Interquartile range
Distance between upper and lower quartile (in ascending order)
Variance
How much scores vary from the mean
Standard deviation
The square root of the variance. Tells us how accurate the mean is in terms of all the data. Tells us shape of distribution of data
Descriptive or exploratory studies
Describe what something is
Eg case studies
Evaluation or outcome studies
Testing the effectiveness of something
Eg therapy
