Why do transcripts need to be precise?

A

Many psychological processes occur during interaction and minute details like timing are important. Also detail in transcripts allows independent researchers to analyse the data properly and reliably. For example a Jefferson transcript.

Why do people use continuers?

A

To display a passive recipiency near moments of transition relevance, they are classed as free standing turns. This allows smooth turn taking whilst allowing listener to show interest and inquiry.
