Qualitative Data 2 Flashcards
What is a thematic analysis?
Identify, analyse, report patterns within data
Summarise qualitative data to understand/interpret people’s thoughts and ideas
Approach the data with a research q but not a hypothesis
Theme’s don’t emerge, they’re waiting to be unearthed
We bring in our own experiences
Use secondary or primary data
What happens in stage 1?
Listen to recordings many times
Read transcript many times
Listen to recording while reading the transcript
Number each line in the data
Make notes on important things
Reflect on how you respond to the data
What is phase 2?
Descriptive
Assign a label/category to each statement to capture what is meaningful about it
Keep concepts simple
You may need to go back and change these codes
What is a code?
Read a script
Note down short comments that sum up segments of the data
What is phase 3?
Look for patterns and relationships
Group codes together
Give each a meaningful label
What is semantic and latent codes?
Semantic: captures the surface meaning of the data
Latent: capture the assumptions underpinning the surface meanings, or uses pre-existing theories to interpret the data
What happens in phase 5?
Write a short description for each theme
Refine the specifics of each theme
Too many themes can be due to under-developed analysis
What happens in phase 6?
Explanation of all themes
Supported with quotes from data
Interpretation
Implications
What is the grounded theory?
Focus on developing a theory
Long process
Different methods for analysing data
Different materials e.g. newspapers, diary, photos
May talk to 2 ps, code the data, then interview more people once the theory has started to develop, interview more people to develop it further
What is the IPA (interpretative phenomenological analysis)?
Focus on an individual’s personal experiences
How patients make sense of their personal and social world
2 layers: person being interviewed, the researcher interpretating their experience
May only collect data from 1 or 2 people, but in great depth
What is a narrative analysis?
People produce accounts of themselves in form of narratives
This is used to develop identity
Looks at the whole structure and content of the narrative
Not interested if this narrative is true
What is a discourse analysis?
How texts can be used to make meanings and share meanings
Language is based on historical, social and political context
Greater focus on how language is used
Goes beyond the literal meanings of words, interested in the underlying meanings
Code data, create themes, progress through material several times, interpret themes in line with research questions
