Managing data and producing a qualitative report Flashcards

1
Q

How can data be kept confidential and private? What is meant by transparency and anonymity?

A

Obtain informed consent from ps before collecting data

Transparency: explain the purpose of the study, potential risks and benefits, how the data will be used and protected and what participation entails

Right to withdraw at any time with no consequences

Anonymity: ps identities are kept confidential by removing any identifying information from the data, instead of using names use pseudonyms or codes

Q

How can data be kept secure? Who should be able to access the data?

A

Store data securely to prevent unauthorized access
e.g. encrypted, password protected
Limit access to only authorized researchers

Q

What should you do if the other researchers are from a different institution?

A

Clear protocols for handling and storing data
Use reputable cloud storage services or secure servers
If the other researchers are from a different institution, there should be measures in place to ensure confidentiality and privacy.
Obtain ps consent for data sharing and consider de-identifying and making data anonymous before sharing externally

Q

What is the Ethics panel? Why?

A

Evaluate research protocols to ensure standards are kept

Ensure ps aren’t exposed to harm by taking part in the study

Q

How is a qualitative report written up? What should be included in the title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references and appendix? In what order?

A

Title- tells you the approach … e.g. thematic analysis

Abstract- summarise a study’s aim, background, method and conclusion. Focus on analysis and results. If it’s a thematic analysis, it will include the final themes that were produced

Introduction- Open with what you find rather than background literature, previous research should be acknowledged, identify gaps that need exploring, aims are described not hypothesis

Method- Detail on ps, each step of how data will be analysed, explain the approach fully

Results- how results were obtained, how the codes were generated, what they were and how they developed, evidence to refine these themes, quotes or a line number from the transcript, should be clear how the data fits the conclusion

Discussion- subjective interpretation
