INTRO
- qualitative = words and description
- favoured by interpretivists as its flexible and open ended
ETHNOGRAPHY
AO1 - immersion of researcher in specific target population to study social behaviour e.g. covert/overt participant observation
AO2 - humphrey tea room - 70s gay men sexual behaviour in public toilet
AO3 - ✅ observe natural behaviour = avoids hawthorn effect ❌ covert = no informed consent, observer bias
UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
AO1 - recorded convos with no preplanned q’s + follow ups for detail
AO2 - oakley - unstructured for women duel burden
AO3 - ✅detailed experiences = validity ❌ interviewer bias (interviewer influence p’s) so say less/more than intended = less reliability
PERSONAL DOCUMENTS
AO1 - gain insight into everyday life e.g. diaries, paintings, newspapers
AO2 - mass observation project (MOP) - people during war recorded everyday life
AO3 - ✅ detail, study people from the past ❌ unrepresentative (not all have diaries or relate to experiences), affected by intended audience e.g. newspaper = elderly
INTERPRETIVISTS
AO1 - favour qualitative data, aim to be non-scientific with natural environment
AO3 - ✅ detailed, recognises feelings and experiences ❌bias/subjective, unreliable
