Qualiative Analysis, Acid Base Titartion Flashcards

1
Q

What is meant by titration/volumetric analysis?

A

A laboratory technique of quantitative-chemical analysis used to determine a concentration of a solution with unknown concentration (which is the “analyte”), by the use of another solution with a known concentration (which is the “standard”) indicating the end point by the indicator

Q

What are some examples of an indicator used in acid-base titration?

A

The type of indicator depends on the pH of the solution and end product:

1) phenolphthalein:

Colorless in acid
Light pink in neutral
Dark pink in base

2) methyl orange:

Red-Yellow in acid
Colorless in neutral and base

3) alizarin

Colorless in acid
Yellow-red in neutral
Red-purple in base

Q

What is meant by a equivalence point?

A

The point at which the acid (H+) reacts completely with a base (OH-) mole of acid = moles of base it has an equation:

Facid * Mole of acid (M (molarity “mol/L” / volume “L”) *V (volume)) = Fbase * mole of base (M * V)
