What is a user requirement?
A need described by the client to be filled by the delivered product. The need to receive, track samples, bar code, and report results are broad examples of user requirements and can be filled by many pieces of software. Our tickets do not make a clear description of user vs. functional requirements.

What is a functional requirement?
A description of how a user requirement will function with specific software. Our tickets do not make a clear description of user vs functional requirements. An example: Stating that a barcode label will be created by the Active Reports 6 engine in the LIMS, at a particular page size, and particular barcode style in the ELab LIMS.

What role does a “Application Engineer” have?
These individuals work directly with clients to gather requirements, manage projects, implement the LIMS. They are responsible for developing Functional Requirements by way of describing the implementation of User Requirements as functionality that will be available through the delivered product or peripheral solutions, in terms that both the client and a developer can relate to. Also responsible for configuring the application to meet these requirements, later testing that the functional requirements are achieved, and working with the client until client approval has been achieved.

An issue or question was reported by a client, but no functional code changes were required to resolve the issue. This usually involves assistance.

What does it mean that a ticket is categorized as “Warranty”?
Defect in a delivered user requirement. In a live system, a client would have reported an issue with existing functionality that
1) Requires a developer to make functional changes to the code
2) Is not a change to a functional or user requirement

The modification of an application by way of developing added or modified functionality.
