Q9 - Control of Reproduction Flashcards
What are the similarities between LH and prolactin?
- Hormones made by pituitary
- Made in response to hormones made by the hypothalamus
- Both can be classed as gonadotropins (only sometimes in the case of prolactin)
What are the differences between LH and prolactin?
LH - stimulated by gonadotropin releasing hormone (GRH), acts on thecal and ledyg cells to produce androgens and granulosa cells to stimulate follicular growth and ovulation
Where are LH and prolactin secreted from?
Anterior pituitary
What hypothalamic hormones stimulate the secretion of LH and prolactin?
LH - gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)
Prolactin - vasoactive intestinal protein (VIP)
What cells does LH act on?
Ledyg (male), thacal and granulosa (female) cells
What does LH do?
Acts on thecal and ledyg cells to produce androgens, and granulosa cells to stimulate follicular growth and ovulation
What does prolactin do?
Inhibits GnRH, stimulates milk production in mammals, and maternal behaviours
What effect does prolactin have on LH?
Prolactin inhibits GnRH, which results in less LH production
