Q1 - Spermatogenesis Flashcards
Define spermatogenesis
Production of male gametes (sperm)
Where does spermatogenesis take place?
In the walls of the seminiferous tubules of the testes
How many rounds of mitosis/meiosis do the germ cells go through in spermatogenesis?
For each of these, are the cells diploid or haploid?
Three round of mitosis (diploid), followed by two rounds of meiosis (haploid)
What are the names of the cells produced after each round of mitosis in spermatogenesis?
1 - spermatogonial stem cells
2 - spermatogonia
3 - Primary spermatocytes
What are the names of the cells produced after each round of meiosis in spermatogenesis?
1 - Secondary spermatocytes
2 - Spermatids
What do sertoli cells do and where are they located?
They provide nourishment for the developing sperm
Located between seminiferous tubules
What is the route spermatids take after exiting the seminiferous tubule lumen?
Rete testis > efferent ducts > epididymis > vas deferens > urethra
Describe the structure and location of the epididymis
A coiled tube pressed against the testes
What occurs in the epididymis?
Chemicals are produced by lining that help spermatids to mature and become motile
What is the vas deferens used for?
Sperm storage
What is the proper name for a mature sperm cell?
Spermatozoon
