What is the main source of heat for a developing bird egg? How does this occur?
Brooding parent provides heat through direct contact
What is a brood patch in birds? What does this do?
A ventral patch of skin with no feathers and lots of blood vessels - improves efficiency of heat provision by covering the dorsal egg surface
What are some negative consequences of the brood patch in birds?
They block some gas exchange in the egg
What behaviours are displayed to maintain egg temperature in birds?
Alter time spent on eggs depending on ambient temperature, egg turning
What is egg turning in birds?
Eggs are rotated around the nest to get an even temperature balance - those on the outside are moved to the inside
