Q8 - Retina, Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
1
Q
Layers of Retina
A
(From outside->inward)
- Int. Limiting membrane
- Nerve fiber layer (ganglion cell axons)
- Ganglion cell layer
- Inner plexiform layer (synapses 2nd&3rd neurons)
- Inner nuclear layer (bipolar cells)
- Outer plexiform layer (synapses 1st&2nd neuron)
- Outer nuclear layer (Rods&Cones nuclei)
- Outer limiting membrane
- Rods & Cones layer (actual photoreceptors)
- Retinal Pigmented Epithelium
- Bruch’s membrane (BM of the choroid).
2
Q
Macula lutea
A
- contains only cones &RPE. Central vision, fovea. It’s own nerve supply, nutrition only from underlying choroid.
3
Q
Optic disc
A
Entry/Exit point of ganglion nerve/optic nerve. Has central retinal artery&vein.
4
Q
Vascular supply of retina
A
2 circulations of the ophthalmic artery (sup & inf)
5
Q
Physiology
A
Registers wavelengths between 380-760nm.
110-125 million rods -> mesotopic (twilight) and scotopic (night) vision. Rhodopsin.
6-7 million cones -> in macula, for color, phototopic (daytime) and resolution. Blue, green and red. Iodopsin.
