pacing
The movement of a Literary piece from one point or one section to another.
Parable
A short tale that teaches a moral lesson; it is similar to but shorter than an allegroy.
Paradox
A statement that seems to contradict itself but turns out to have a rational meaning.
Parallelism
The technique of arranging words, phrases, clauses, or large structures by placing them side by side and making them similar in form.
Parody
A work that ridicules the style of another work by imitating and exaggerating its elements.
Participle
A verbal that is used as an adjective and most often ends in -ing or -ed.
Personification
Involves giving characteristics of life to inanimate objects.
Persuasion
A form of argumentation, one of the four modes of discourse; it involves using language to convince through appeals to reason or emotion.
Qalification
Occurs when an author agrees, in part, to an assertion or claim but wishes to redefine the terms of or add limitations to that assertion or claim.
Rebuttal/ Refutation
An opposing argument, a contradiction. To prove an argument is wrong.
Regionalism
An element in literature that conveys a realistic portrayal of a specific geographical locale, using the locale and its influences as a major part of the plot.
Repetition
A word or phrase used two or more times in close proximity.
Rhetoric
The art of speaking or writing effectively in order to persuade.
Rhetorical Question
A question that does not expect an explicit answer.
Sarcasm
Involves harsh, caustic remarks to or about someone. It is less subtle than irony.
