Q4K Physics ¦ Cycle 2 Year 8 Flashcards
What is speed?
How much distance an object moves in a certain time.
What is average speed?
The overall distance travelled divided by the overall time for a journey.
What is relative motion?
Different observers judge speeds differently if they are in motion too, so an object’s speed is relative to the observer’s speed.
What is acceleration?
How quickly speed increases or decreases.
What is equilibrium?
State of an object when opposing forces are balanced.
What is deformation?
Changing shape due to a force.
What is linear relationship?
When two variables are graphed and show a straight line which goes through the origin, and they can be called directly proportional.
What is a newton?
Unit for measuring forces (N)
What is resultant force?
The overall (or net) force experienced by an object. The sum of all other forces acting on the object.
What is friction?
Force opposing motion which is caused by the interaction of surfaces moving over one another. It is called drag if one is a fluid.
What is tension?
Force extending or pulling apart.
What is compression?
Force squashing or pulling together.
What is contact force?
A force that acts by direct contact.
What is Hooke’s Law?
The extension of an elastic object( like a spring) is directly proportional to the force added.
