Adaptation-Food Webs and Adaptation ¦ Cycle 1 Q4K Flashcards
What is a food web?
Shows all of the organisms in an ecosystem and what eats what.
What is an organism?
Plants and animals.
What do the arrows indicate?
The direction of the energy transfer.
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which organisms take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen.
What is a producer?
The organism at the bottom of the food chain. They store energy from the Sun.
What is a primary consumer?
The organism that eats the producer.
What is a consumer?
An animal that eats another organism.
What is a secondary consumer?
The organism that eats the primary consumer.
What is a tertiary consumer?
The organism that eats the secondary consumer.
What is a carnivore?
An organism that only eats meat.
What is a omnivore?
An organism that eats meat and plants.
What is a herbivore?
An organism that only eats plants.
What is adaptation?
When an organism changes over time to suit a specific environment.
What is competition?
When organisms in an ecosystem compete for the same resources.
What is niche?
A particular place or role occupied by an organism within an ecosystem.
What is evolution?
Gradual change for a species of organisms over long periods of time.
What is survival of the fittest?
Individuals that are poorly adapted to their environment are less likely to survive and reproduce. Given enough time, they will evolve.
What is natural selection?
The process by which organisms with favourable characteristics are more likely to survive long enough to reproduce. The less desirable traits die out, while the more desirable traits get passed on.
