Q15. How has world politics been affected by the 20th century crisis of modernity? Flashcards
Define modernity
Modernity has been associated with the spread of capitalism, the decline of empires, and the development of international organizations and norms.
We must remember that modernity is a very Eurocentric concept. The concept of modernity monopolizes and universalizes its own ways of thinking, erasing and exploiting others through forms of modern power.
When was modernity?
- Pre-modernity: 16th century to 1789 (French Revolution)
- Classical/early modernity: 17-19th century
- Mature modernity: 20th century to end of Cold War
- today we live in the post-modern era
Describe the crisis of modernity
Modernity was in crisis because the system it sought to establish (the system of soverign nation-states) has seemingly failed.
What has led to the demise of modernity?
Nationalism
In modern times, war was used to maintain the balance of power. Today in post-modern times there is no balance of power.
