Q1. When did IR emerge as an academic discipline? Flashcards
When did the study of IR first emerge?
After World War I. Major David Davis, a member of British parliament at the time, donated 20,000 GPB to the University of Aberystwyth and its department of International Politics which is also dedicated to Woodrow Wilson.
What do students of IR study?
the study of the relations of collective social entities and political units and their durability. Those that are made up of groups of people with durability – clans, city states, empires, or nation states of modern times. IR is distinguishable from the study of history, law, economics and political science because it encompasses all of these in a holistic manner taking account not only reality but also perceptions, both historic and future.
Talk about the basis of IR in academia.
The original goal of international relations was to herald a world free form the menace of war. The basis of the first IR schools had a liberal approach. Same as the League of Nations, which was also founded at the same time. This liberal approach stems from the ideal that war is not natural and that instead can be prevented through cooperation and the creation of common goals. Everyone involved in the positive thinking transitional periods were of the mind that World War 1 was the last major war.
