Q#4 CH 10 Flashcards
chapter10
research design
how you set up the different condition for your experiment (the number conditions, the sequence of the conditions)
the purpose of research design
is to separate the effects of the independent variable from everything else. (the depended variable)
how do you accomplish the purpose of research design
you need at least two conditions that are identical except for the presence or absence of the independent variable.
what are the four components of research design?
- at least have one subject (for every subject added you need to consider the history, age, experience because you want to keep similar to whatever extent possible)
- at least have one dependent variable
- at least have one experimental setting
- at least have one independent variable ( this is made of multiple components)
what are the three ways research design can be?
- Simultaneous
- sequential
- or both
simultaneous research design
conditions are presented at approximately the same point in time. (allows you to comper data collected at the same point in time)
sequential research design
the conditions are presented in some predetermined order across time. (typical aba design)
what research design can you run if you only have one subject, one setting, one dependent variable?
you can only run a sequential design.
what research design can you run if you have more than one subject more than one setting and or more than one depended variable
you can also run simultaneously design
what is called when it is both a simultaneous and sequential design?
multiple baselines design
Staver multiple baselines design
introduce your different condition at different points in time. (it help rule out the effect of time)
when you have found the condition that is sufficient to produce a functional relation
you have demonstrated a functional relation
what are the two general types of replication
- direct replication when you reproducing the same study (gives you information about the reliability of the effect
- systematic replication is when you reproduce the study with some changes (gives you information reliability of effect and generality of your effect)
there are five levels of replication
- within session replication ( like pushing a lever)
- within a phase is a condition (like 30-minute experiment and repeat for all the other days)
- within an experiment replication (add the second baseline is a replication of the first)
- within a literature replication (study in the same disaplin)
- across literature replication
