Pyshcodynamic Aproach Ao3 Flashcards
Psychodynamic approach Ao3 strength
Practical applications
Principles of the theory that behaviour is caused by conflict in the unconscious mind has lead to treatment of psychoanalysis
Which can be used to treat abnormalities in the real world
By identifying and resolving unconscious conflicts
Thus psychodynamic explanation of human behaviour is an important part of applied psychology as it help to treat people in the real world
Psychodynamic approach Ao3 limitation
Does not use sicietific methods and so does not use scientific enquiry to investigate human behaviour
Because key concepts such as the unconscious and the Id, ego, superego are abstract concepts
Which cannot be objectively and empiricaly tested and falsified - cannot be observed objectively
Thus could be argued that this decreases overall internal validity of psychodynamic approach’s explanation of structure of personality
As well as human behaviour - which could additionally reduce psychology’s scientific status
Psychodynamic approach strength
Criticised for psychic determinism
Because feature suggest an individual is controlled by external and internal factors such as fixations occurring at specific stages that inevitably cause behaviour
such as oral fixations resulting to behaviour such as smoking
Neglect role of free will leaving individuals feeling like they have no control over behaviour
Limiting appropriateness of psychodynamic approach to explaining human behaviour
Assumption of Humanistic psychology
All humans can determine own behaviour and have free will
