Q

Describe defence mechanisms

A

Ego has difficult job balancing conflicting demand of ID and superego , so it uses defence mechanisms

These are unconscious and stop Ego from becoming overwhelmed with conflicts

However defence mechanisms distort a persons reality

And overuse can affect behaviour, so they are not a long term solution

Q

What is suggested about psychosexual stages ?

A

Freud suggested all children progress through 5 development stages, known as psychosexual stages

As a way to explain how Id get sexual satisfaction from birth

During most stages there’s is a specific conflict, outcome of which determines future development

Children must resolve conflict at each stage

If they do not resolve conflict they become ‘fixated’ leading to certain behaviours in childhood
