Defence Mechanism Flashcards
Defence mechanism
Unconscious stragergies that ego uses to manage conflict between Id and superego
For example Repression - forcing a distressing memmory out of the conscious mind
Describe defence mechanisms
Ego has difficult job balancing conflicting demand of ID and superego , so it uses defence mechanisms
These are unconscious and stop Ego from becoming overwhelmed with conflicts
However defence mechanisms distort a persons reality
And overuse can affect behaviour, so they are not a long term solution
What are the 3 defence mechanisms?
Repression
Denial
Displacement
Repression
Forcing distressing memmory out of the mind to the unconscious
E.g. forgetting trauma of favourite pet dying
Denial
Refusing to acknowledge and unpleasant aspect of reality
Eg. Continuing to turn up for work even though you have been sacked
Displacement
Transferring feelings from the true source of distressing emotions onto a less threatening substitute target
E.g slamming door after a argument with a person
What are the 5 psychosexual stages ?
Oral
Anal
Phallic
Latency
Genital
What is suggested about psychosexual stages ?
Freud suggested all children progress through 5 development stages, known as psychosexual stages
As a way to explain how Id get sexual satisfaction from birth
During most stages there’s is a specific conflict, outcome of which determines future development
Children must resolve conflict at each stage
If they do not resolve conflict they become ‘fixated’ leading to certain behaviours in childhood
Oral 0-1 years
Gratification from ID is gained from mouth such as dummies , thumb sucking and the mothers breast
Oral if unresolved
Oral fixation - smoking biting nail , sarcastic and critical in the future
Anal 1-3 years
Gratification for ID is gained from the anus such as expulsion or withholding faeces
Anal if unresolved
Anal retentive personality - perfectionist , obsessive
Anal expulsive personality- thoughtless messy
Phallic 3-5 years
Gratification for Id is gained from exploring own genitals
Child will need to identify with its same gender parent and take on values and attitudes and behaviours to resolve conflict at this stage
Phallic if unresolved
Phallic personality - narcissistic, reckless problems with authority
Latency 6-12 years
earlier conflicts are repressed
