Psychosexual Stages of Development
Different parts of the body is the primary source of erotic pleasure resulting in behaviors that we adopt through adulthood and failure to negotiate the Psychosexual stage determines the level of intimacy of relationships a person has in adulthood and how successful it may be.
How many stages are there?
5 Stage 1: Oral Stage Stage 2: Anal Stage Stage 3: Phallic Stage Stage 4: Latency Period Stage 5: Genital Stage
Stage 1: Oral Stage
Age: Birth-1yr. old
Erotic Pleasure: Breast/substitute
Reason: Fundamental need to take in nourishment and to breathe
Examples:
- suckling w/o feeding gives satisfaction
- uses mouth as means to investigate the world
Stage 2: Anal Stage
Age: (2-3 years of age)
Erotic Pleasure: Anus/sphincter
Reason: Control over bowel movement
Examples: None
Stage 3: Phallic Stage
Age: (3-6 years of age)
Erotic Pleasure: Penis, clitoris, & vulva
Reason:
-Pleasure derived from self-stimulation with a love object (e.g. mother for boy; father for girl)
-Oedipus Complex- relationship between the father and daughter
-Electra Complex- relationship between the mother and son
RESOLUTION: suppressing the love for the opposite sex will allow for the relationship to increase with the same sex
Examples:
Stage 4: Latency Period
Age: 6-11 years of age
Erotic Pleasure: Genital areas primarily but sexual feelings cont. to be suppressed and prolonging the Oedipus Complex
Reason: Satisfactory negotiating of this stage could result in discomfort with members of the opposite sex and poor relations with them as well
Examples:
-maintain parental standards
-Superego maintains parental standards

Stage 5: Genital Stage
Age: 12yrs of age to adulthood
Erotic Pleasure: Genitals, intercourse is the main infatuation
-societies that encourages suppression leads an individual to be involved in extra curricular activities, etc.
