Describe Separation Anxiety
Occurrence: 6-8 months old
Description: The distress caused when the child is separated from their primary care giver.
Describe Stranger Anxiety
Occurrence: 8 months of age
Description: The effect that a stranger has on a child oppose to that of a familiar person.
List the 4 prolonged separation phases
- Protest Phase
- Despair/Depression Phase
- Detachment Phase
- Anaclitic Depression
Describe Protest Phase
The action/behavior a child expresses when not wanting to be detached from the primary person
Describe Despair/Depression Phase
The phse in which a child will experience after prolonging the Protest Phase through crying and eventually depression.
Describe Detachment Phase
The ability for the child to be detached through repression; seen as an adaptive response for most children, if overused, becomes problematic.
Describe Anaclitic Depression
Depression that develops in infants when no longer with care takers that are genuine and nurturing.
List the characteristics of attachment according to Bowlby

- Safe Haven
- Secure Base
- Separation Distress
Describe Proximity Maintenance
Refers to the distance a person has an attachment with.
Describe Safe Haven
The place/person a child identifies when in fear or threat
Describe Secure Base
The distance a child places between the person they are attached to w/o fear of abandonment.
Describe Separation Distress
The stress that occurs when not around the “attached” to.
