What is a pyogenic granuloma
A
A rapidly growing capillary haemangioma which usually measures less than 1cm in diameter
*It is neither pyogenic or a granuloma

What are the features of a pyogenic granuloma
A
Bright red or blood-encrusted
Hemispherical nodule
May be sessile or pedunculated
May be associated with serous or purulent discharge
Soft
Slightly compressible (due to vascular origin)
May bleed easily
Associated with trauma
Grows rapidly in a few days
Can be painful

How would you treat a pyogenic granuloma
A
Non-surgical:
- Regression is uncommon (unless in pregnancy)
- Silver nitrite stick can be attempted
Surgical:
- Curettage with diathermy of the base
- Complete excision biopsy

What would you be suspicious of if the pyogenic granuloma was recurrent
A
Malignancy eg. amelanotic melanoma
