PX Building Systems And Integration Flashcards
What is displacement ventilation?
It is an air distribution system where supply air starts at the ground floor and rises to return to the air grilles in the ceiling
What is a three way switch?
It is a switch that allows you to control a light from two different locations
What are the two most important variables affecting sound transmission through a building element?
Mass and stiffness
What is sound transmission class (STC)?
It is the rating of a partitions ability to reduce sound transmission
5 basic ways to control sound transmission through a partition
- Increase the mass
- Provide additional resilience
- Insulate the cavity
- Seal all the cracks between components
- Provide sealed openings
What is daylight factor (DF)?
Ratio of illuminance point on a horizontal indoor surface to an unobstructed exterior horizontal illuminance
What are the components of a fire-rated door assembly?
Door, frame, and hardware
What is a sole plate?
Horizontal wood that serves as the base for the studs in a wood stud partition
What’s the difference between residential and commercial wallboard partitions?
Residential wallboard partitions are 2x4 wood studs with 1/2” wallboard
Commercial wallboard partitions are metal studs with 5/8” studs
How is a fire-rated suspended acoustic ceiling different from a standard non-rated ceiling?
-it’s part of an entire fire-rated floor and ceiling assembly
-the tiles must be rated mineral tiles
-must use hold-down clips
-must have expansion slots in the grid
What are the two types of concrete structural systems?
Cast-in-place and precast
When would a flat plate concrete construction system be used?
This would be used in a situation where floor-to-floor heights are kept to a minimum
What is live load?
Weight of people, furniture, and moveable equipment
What is the type of load created on a building by the force of wind or an earthquake?
Lateral load
What is required at the top of a partition to accommodate deflection of the floor above?
A slip joint
What is a core drill?
It is a hole between 2”-4”D drilled through concrete floor to accommodate conduits for phone and data
Why should post-tensioned concrete slabs never be cut into?
They should never be cut into because the tendons are under high stress
What are joists and what are they usually made of?
Joists are horizontal repetitive elements used to support floors and they’re usually made with 2”W wood
How far are residential studs and joists spaced apart?
16” on center
What is a chase wall?
It is two runs of studs separated by a space large enough to accommodate pipes
What is an access door?
It is an opening used to provide access to mechanical and electrical components behind walls
What are the two methods to measure speech privacy in offices?
- Articulation class
- Articulation index
What are the four types of fire detection devices?
- Photoelectric detectors
- Rise-of-temperature detectors
- Ionization detectors
- Flame detectors
