FX - Human Behavior Flashcards
What is territoriality?
Human behavior that lays claim on a certain space as a way to define self-identity
What is proxemics?
Study of social separation that people keep while interacting and how that is related to cultural factors
What are the proxemics distances (from closest to furthest)?
Intimate, personal, social, public
What would be the best table configuration for a committee meeting?
The best table configuration for this would be a circular table and seating configuration because it fosters cooperation
What is a design theory?
It is a mental construct based on beliefs used to direct a design
What is gestalt theory?
It is a theory that people perceive their environment as a whole and add structure to what they see
What is grouping in regards to gestalt theory?
Tendency to see separate elements in a visual field as a whole
What is perceptual constancy in terms of gestalt theory?
The tendency for people to perceive a familiar thing the same way despite a change in position, lighting, etc
What are the visual cues in which people perceive depth and distance?
Linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, texture perspective, interposition, closeness of an object to the horizon line, relative size differences
What are the six elements of design?
Form, scale, color, texture, pattern, light
What are the colors of pigment?
Yellow, magenta, cyan
What is a hue?
The most basic color classification (what separates blue from yellow)
What is color intensity/chroma?
Saturation; degree of purity of a hue when compared to a neutral gray in the same scale
What are two other names for the color wheel?
Brewster or prang
What are the terms the munsell systems uses to define colors?
Hue, value, chroma
What is simultaneous contrast?
When a color seems to change when placed on different backgrounds
What’s the design element that can be perceived through both touch and sight?
Texture
What are the six principles of design?
Balance, harmony and unity, rhythm, emphasis and focus, contrast and variety, proportion
What is radial balance?
Uniform arrangement of elements around a central point
What’s a way that harmony could be communicated through interior design?
Harmony is communicated when the elements of an interior seem to belong together
How could emphasis and focus be achieved in interior design?
Emphasis and focus can be achieved by placing an element in a prominent position or using special lighting
What the difference between proportion and scale?
Proportion is the size relationship between objects/elements in a space.
Scale is the relative size of an object compared to something of a known size (the human body)
What are the three ways the human body loses heat?
Radiation, convection, evaporation
How much space should be between people seated along the edge of a table?
24” - 30”
What is mean radiant temperature?
Mean radiant temperature is how much heat someone loses/gains because of radiation within a space. It’s used to determine how comfortable a temperature in a space is
What is the primary goal for the acoustical design of an open-plan office?
Speech privacy
What is simultaneous contrast?
When a color looks different when placed with a lighter color background and a darker color background
Providing adjustable desks in an office is an example of what type of design?
Inclusive design
