PV Module Fundamentals Flashcards
Use this deck to learn about all of the PV module aspects of a PV system installation.
If you had 4 modules of the same voltage (a pair of 100 and a pair of 120 watt modules) and you were to connect them to an inverter in 2 series, would it work better to separate the pairs or string similar watt modules together?
It is best to keep the similar modules together.
What is Isc?
ISC, known as the short circuit current, is the maximum current from a solar cell and occurs when the voltage across the device is zero.
Your customer’s solar array has 12 Kyocera KC85T modules arranged in 2 series of 6 modules per each string. Can 130.2 volts at 10.68 Amps be an output parameter under STC?
No
What tilt angle will receive the highest average winter insolation?
The location’s latitude plus 15 degrees
When a module is shorted out, what is the current released known as?
Isc
It is highly unlikely that your modules can charge your batteries in an interactive battery backup system when what happens?
The grid shuts down.
What does NOT reduce or enhance solar irradiation received at a particular location?
Module efficiency
A solar installer has four modules of the same voltage, but one pair is 100 watts and the other is 120 watts. What happens when the installer connects them to an inverter in 2 series strings?
When possible, similarly rated modules should be kept together for maximum efficiency. The modules will still work in this situation, but not at maximum efficiency.
What happens if the grid shuts down in an interactive battery backup system?
If the grid shuts down, it is highly unlikely that your modules can charge your batteries in an interactive battery backup system.
What is the maximum number of series connected Kyocera KC200GT (Vmp= 26.3) modules that would be in the operating range of the SMA 2500 U inverter?
22
If modules were facing direct north and oriented vertically (90 degree tilt), would there be a time within the year when the sun rays would reach the panels at 38 degrees latitude? If this is the case, how many months would the sun hit the modules facing north?
Yes; 6 months
Measuring the individual module voltages in the source circuit is the appropriate follow-up test for what condition?
If the current in one circuit is significantly lower than the currents in the remaining source circuits of a PV array.
What happens to the module when temporarily shorting the output terminals?
There is no effect on the module.
Name the factors that reduce or enhance solar irradiation received at a particular location.
Altitude, the Earth’s position in relation to the Sun, and the ozone.
The loss of function of a PV module is most likely due to what?
Corrosion of metal
