- Started in 1556 when Thomas Sampson Dean of christ Church Oxford refused to wear a surplice and was deprived
- The purtain did win some concessions on this but still refused to conform and 37 London preachers were deprived in 1566
- Some of those deprived created indepent churches.

- The purtains won concessions over accepting 39 articles that defined the church’s beliefs, clegry only had accept the doctrine
- In 1571 the MP walter Strickland proposed changes to the prayer book but he was summoned before the privy coucil for infringing on the Royal prerogative

- 1572 the ministers, John field pubished the admonittion of Parliament it called for the church hierarchy to be replaced he was later sent to jail

- Some purtain preachers were protected by privy Council such cecil and Leicester
- Prophesying where clegry came together to discuss the bible
- However they could not agree on a doctrine and it was Bible centred so it meant they had to be literate to understand
