Punishment, Deterrence, Denubnciation, Rehabilitation, Protection
Purpose of punishment
Used to penalise offender and can be different extents. Also the intention behind punishments is that it acts as a form of retribution for the victim(s) and community
Purpose of Deterrence
Discouraging offender and others in society by imposing a sanction that demonstrates the serious consequences that may when committing the same crime.
General deterrence is aimed at discouraging the whole community
Specific deterrence is aimed at discouraging the offender themselves from reoffending
Purpose of denunciation
Acts to condemn the behaviour of the accused and show that the particular behaviour they exhibited within society
Not tolerated by courts and community
Purpose of rehabilitation
Offender is reformed in order to ensure they do not commit further crimes within the community
Purpose of protection
Prevent offender from harming again by removing from society
