* singular nouns and want to add possession = add ‘s (EXCEPTION is when singular noun already has an ‘s’ ending ie. sports, politics, statistics, mathmatematics, physics, news, economics; for those, just at ‘)
* plural nouns that DO end with an ‘s’ and want to add possession = just add ‘.
* plural nouns that DON’t end with an ‘s’ and want to add possession= add ‘s
* possessive pronouns that DO NOT need apostrophe: his, hers, its, ours, theirs

Formal- neutral/ serious tone
* AVOID contractions
* use 3rd person POV (ie. one or the reader) AND NOT 1st or 2nd person [can use ‘who’]
* long, complex sentences
* examples: speaking to superior, at school, job interviews, news, business, textbooks, work place, gathering of college professors
Informal- ironic, sarcastic, humorous tone
* figures of speech and slang and colloquialisms
* USE contractions, abbreviations (ie. ASAP), and 1st or 2nd POV (ie. you, your)

* examples: personal conversations (ie. text messages), private letters (ie. letters to friends), personal emails, novels, short fiction.
