Capital letters
Used at the start of every sentence
Used for Proper nouns (Names of people,places and
things)
Titles of books, movies or plays (Title is a name)
Full stop . . . .
Used at the end of a sentence

Used to separate items in a list
Colons : : : :
(A stronger form of punctuation than a comma)
How do we use it in a sentence?
Used to introduce a list
eg: Mother asked me to buy the following items:
cheese,bread,sausages and butter.
Used to write the time (3:30)
Used to link two sentences, when the second sentence
gives more information about the first
Used to introduce a quotation.
eg: Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most
powerful weapon which you can use to change
the world”.
Used in dialogue format to separate the speaker from the words spoken
eg: John: It was a mistake, Mr Smith.
Mr Smith: Mistakes can be expensive, John.
Semi-colons ; ; ; ;
Doesn’t come to a complete stop in a sentence like a full stop does
Used to separate longer items in a list (two or more words)
Used to seperate two sentences with closely related meanings where there is no conjunction joining them
eg: She studied hard for her test; she knew she would
do well.

1) Our family loves playing cricket: we enjoyed playing
cricket every day.
2) I like to: eat pizza; hang out with friends; play
minecraft and study my awesome English notes.
3) You tried your hardest; second place is still good
though
Question mark ? ? ? ?
Used after asking a question?
Exclamation mark ! ! ! !
Used with strong feeling or command
Used with shouting
Marks the end of a sentence “Watch out!”
Inverted commas or Quotation marks (“ “)
Come in pairs and show exactly what a person says.
Commas and full stops go inside of the quotation marks.
eg: “I had a fantastic time at the zoo,” Joseph said.
Wendy said, “It is such a lovely, sunny day today.”
