Rules for converting (changing over)

Indirect speech to Direct speech

A

Use the reporting verb, “say” or “said to” in its correct tense.

Remove the conjuctions “that, to, if or whether etc”. …

Insert quotation marks, question mark, exclamation and fullstop, wherever necessary.

Put a comma before the statement.

Eg: Direct speech
The policeman said to the boy, “Where do you
live?”

  Indirect speech
  The policeman asked the boy where he lived.

Why do we use Indirect speech?

A

We use reported speech (INDIRECT) when we want to repeat what someone had previously said. … In reported speech (INDIRECT) we need to use the PAST TENSE form of the verb.
In DIRECT SPEECH the PRESENT TENSE is used.
