Direct Speech
Is when you write down what the person actually said using Quotation marks.
Indirect Speech
When you write what was said in your words
Rules for converting (changing over)
Indirect speech to Direct speech
Use the reporting verb, “say” or “said to” in its correct tense.
Remove the conjuctions “that, to, if or whether etc”. …
Insert quotation marks, question mark, exclamation and fullstop, wherever necessary.
Put a comma before the statement.
Eg: Direct speech
The policeman said to the boy, “Where do you
live?”
Indirect speech The policeman asked the boy where he lived.
Change the following Direct Speech into Indirect Speech.
“What time does the train arrive?” she asked
She asked what time the train arrived.
Change the following Direct Speech into Indirect Speech.
“When can we have dinner?” she asked.
She asked when they could have dinner.
Why do we use Indirect speech?
We use reported speech (INDIRECT) when we want to repeat what someone had previously said. … In reported speech (INDIRECT) we need to use the PAST TENSE form of the verb.
In DIRECT SPEECH the PRESENT TENSE is used.
