For proper nouns
Capital Letters
End of sentence or after certain abbreviations.
Full Stops: (.)
Separate words in list, where a phrase or clause ends and another begins, additional info, before however and nevertheless, introductory words, DONT USE BETWEEN TWO MAIN CLAUSES= SPLICE ERROR.
Commas: (,)
Long pauses, also indicates apposing ideas, joins two main clauses and is often replaces by a full stop or conjunction.
Semi-Colons: (;)
Indicates list, introduces quotation and is put in a dialogue.
Colons: (:)
End of a question, Rhetorical question.
Questions Marks: (?)
Indicates direct speech, used to quote, used to excuse slang, metaphoric usage.
Quotation Marks: (‘’) (“”)
Exclamations or interjections, strengthens tone, shows strong emotion.
Exclamations Marks: (!)
Additional info, could be replaces by commas or dashes
Parenthesis: (BRACKETS)
Links prefix to words or two words for a compound word, facilitate spelling and pronunciation, or if a word is not completed this is put in place as the word continues to the next line.
Hyphen: (-)
Separates parts of sentence for a pause, additional info, separates a comment or an afterthought, leading to a climax or anti-climax.
Dash: (_)
Modern communication.
Bullets : (*)
Incomplete sentence, reader could guess the rest.
Ellipsis: (…)
Highlight, or computer editing.
Italics: (Fancy writing)
