Pulmonary Vasodilators Flashcards
1
Q
Pulmonary Vasodilators
A
-Dilate pulmonary blood vessels by bonding to hemoglobin and improving oxygen transfer
2
Q
Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO)
A
- Used to treat persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN)
- Used off-label for adult ARDS
- Used in conjunction with ventilatory support
- Short half life (5 seconds)
- Ordered in parts per million (i.e. 20ppm)
- Can be toxic – must monitor nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
3
Q
Epoprostenol
A
(Flolan-injection/ Veletri-inhalation)
- Similar pulmonary vasodilator effects as iNO
- Cheaper
- NOT approved for newborns
