Diuretics Flashcards
1
Q
Diuretics
A
- Affect the metabolic acid-base balance in the body
- Prevent sodium reabsorption, which also prevents water reabsorption → increases water excretion in urine
- Water loss from diuretics may cause acid-base imbalances like metabolic alkalosis
- Remember that pH is directly proportional to HCO3
2
Q
Cardiopulmonary issues from excess fluid caused by
A
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- ARDS
- hemodynamic instability
- trauma
3
Q
Furosemide
A
(Lasix)
- Loop diuretic
- Used for hypertension, CHF, acute and chronic renal failure, acute pulmonary edema
- ‘high ceiling’ diuretic → causes increased load of NaCl and water to be excreted in urine
- Produces vasodilatory effect within 5 minutes of administration; diuretic effect after 15 minutes
