Pulmonary system Flashcards

Q

Anaerobic threshold in endurance

A
  • AT is good predictor of marathon times
  • cannot work at VO2 max for more than a few minutes due to H and La build up
  • exercise up until AT is mostly aerobic
  • “red line” is 85% VO2 max for athletes

Q

anaerobic threshold

A

The point at which the aerobic system is not providing ATP well enough and needs help from the anaerobic system.
- slow > fast glycolysis (increase H and La)
- BLa rise, minute ventilation decrease disproportionate to O2 consumption
- good indicator of endurance times, training intensity

Q

how is AT measured

A

AT is identified by disproportionate increase in BLa and/or gas exchange parameters during exericse
- blood lactate (LT)
- ventilatory variables (VT)

Q

lactate threshold (LT)

A

Point during incremental exercise where BLa is higher than resting levels (LT1) (> 2mmol)
LT2 indicates rapid BLa increase and upper limit of production and clearance of La (>4mmol)
- visual methods, OBLA, MLSS

Q

ventilatory threshold (VT)

A

Point during exercise when ventilation rate is higher than VO2.
VT1: breathing rate increases
VT2: start to be out of breath
- measured vs PO, time, %VO2, VCO2
