Four essential areas of pulmonary rehab
- Exercise capacity
- Symptoms (dyspnea and fatigue)
- Health-related QoL
- Psychosocial status
Candidates for Referral
Obstructive disease: COPD, CF, Bronchiectasis
Restrictive diseases: Idiopathic Pulm Fibrosis, Sarcoidosis
High risk for COPD
Chest wall defects: Spinal, obesity, NM weakness
Other: Heart failure, PVD, Stroke
CONTRAINDICATIONS to pulmonary rehab
Psychiatric involvement - Dementia
Unstable cardiac status, substance abuse, cancer, liver failure, neurologic or orthopedic condition preventing ambulation
Pulmonary education should focus on what?
Disease process
Medications
Stress Management
Energy Conservation
Benefits of Exercise (functional strength training)
Maintaining good hydration for clearance
What would be involved in a breathing class?
Pursed lip breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, bronchial hygiene/airway clearance techniques
Benefits of Pulmonary Rehab
Reduced hospitalizations, improved QoL, decreased respiratory symptoms, reduced isolation, improved knowledge of disease management, improved ADLs, & increased survival rate
