Pulmonary meds and supplemental O2 Flashcards
The learner will recall common side effects of bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and oxygen The learner will relate common pulmonary medications to pulmonary pathologies The learner will relate common pulmonary medications to pulmonary surgeries and use of the ventilator The learner will apply pulmonary exercise physiology to exercise prescription
What is important for pulmonary response to exercise?
Intensity of exercise over the mode of exercise
Dyspnea and RPE are good predictors for exerise prescription and monitoring alongside vital signs
(There are four)
Function of pulmonary meds
- Bronchodilation and/or limiting bronchoconstriction
- Facilitation of mucocilliary function (therefore secretion clearance)
- Increased alveolar ventilation and/or improved oxygenation
- Improved control of breathing pattern
Purpose of bronchodilators- adrenergic agonists
- Increase sympathetic stimulation and create bronchodilation
- Action: works on secondary NT messengers
Side effects of bronchodilators- adrenergic agonists
IncreaseBP and HR, positiveionotropiceffect,palpitations,vasoconstriction,anginalpain
Main action of bronchodilators- adrenergic agonists
Prevents reuptake of norepinephrine
Purpose of bronchodilators- adrenergic antagonists
- For hypertensive crisis
- Works on alpha-receptors to block bronchoconstriction
Side effects of bronchodilators- adrenergic antagonists
N/V, hypotension, dizziness
How are bronchodilators- adrenergic antagonists administered?
Injection
Action of bronchodilators- muscarinic antagonists
Stimulates vagus nerve (sympathetic)
Side effects of bronchodilators- muscarinic antagonists
Tachycardia, blurred vision, constipation
Action of medications for PF
Downregulates growth factors of procollagen I and II
Side effects of medications for PF
N/V,rash, diarrhea,dizziness,HA,fatigue, URI,insomnia, weight loss,arthralgia, liver issues
Action of medication for pulmonary HTN
Dilation, Ca+ channel blockers, diuretics
Side effects of medications for pulmonary HTN
- Dilation: N/V, diarrhea,dz, HA, flushing, sweating,hypotension, tachycardia,myalgia
- Ca+: edema, nausea, HA, fatigue, drowsiness, palpitations
- Diuretics: hypotension, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, blurred vision
Action and purpose of corticosteroid
- Decrease mucosal inflammation
- Immunosuppression
- Ex: prednisone, budenoside, cortisone
