Beta 2 Sympathomimetics
12 hour acting med for difficult to control/chronic asthmatics.
Albuterol
Beta 2 Sympathomimetics
4 hour rescue inhaler for acute attacks. Peaks in 15-30 minutes.
Side effects of Beta 2 Sympathomimetics.
Tremor, palpitations, headache, nervousness.
Epinephrine - Adrenalin
Non-Selective Sympathomimetics
Short duration - strong effect in blood vessels, moderate effect on bronchial muscles.
Ephedrine
Non-Selective Sympathomimetics
Long duration - moderate effect on bronchial muscles
Side effects of Non-Selective Sympathomimetics
Same as Beta 2 Sympathomimetics, plus increased myocardial contractility and HR.
Side effects of Sympatholytics.
Agitation and tachycardia
Atropine
Parasympatholytics
Absorbed quickly, short duration.
Atrovent
Parasympatholytics
Inhaled, so not absorbed into the circulation as much. Has less side effects than Atropine.
Side effects of Parasympatholytics.
Depression, delirium, and hallucinations.
Theophylline
Methylxanthines
For bronchoconstriction
Side effects of Methylxanthines.
Agitation, tachycardia
Symbicort and Advair
Combination Inhaled Corticosteroid and Bronchodilator.
COPD and chronic asthma
Side effects of Combination Inhaled Corticosteroid and Bronchodilator.
Tachycardia, respiratory infections, muscle cramps, and tremors
Prednisone and Methylprednisolone
Glucocorticoids
For acute episodes. Given in decreasing dosages over 7-10-day period.
