Pulmonary cavities Flashcards
Thoracic cage boundaries
Anteriorly: Sternum
Laterally: 12 pairs of ribs and the costal cartilage
Posteriorly: Thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12)
Sternal Angle
Manubriosternal joint, between manubrium and body of sternum
Pulmonary cavities
Bilateral compartments, each containing lung and pleurae
Mediastinum
Central compartment of the thoracic cavity, containing the heart and structures that move air, blood and food (Trachea, vessels, and esophagus)
Divisions of Mediastinum
Superior mediastinum (above sternal angle between T4 and T5)
Inferior mediastinum (divided into Anterior, middle and posterior)
Superior Mediastinum
Great vessels and branches (or tributaries)
Esophagus
Trachea
Middle Mediastinum
Heart, pericardium, roots of great vessels
Posterior Mediastinum
Thoracic aorta, esophagus, azygos, and hemi-azygos vein and tributaries
Apex of lungs
travels into the root of the neck, exits the thorax
Fissures of the lungs
Horizontal Fissure: R Lung
Oblique Fissure: L+R Lungs
Lobes of each lung
Right: Superior, middle, and inferior
Left: Superior and inferior
Differences between left and right lung
The left lung has a cardiac notch (due to the heart) and Lingula (tongue-like process below notch)
The Left Lung only has one fissure
Left lung is smaller
